Norita Pinas
From 25 March - 13 May, 2018 the installation piece 'As You Know Him II' by Norita Pinas was on show in our gallery.
Exhibiting artist Norita Pinas is from Suriname. The village where she grew up disappeared due to the long guerilla struggle that raged in the country. Her work is a search from the past towards the roots of the present.
Her art practice shapes her ideas and feelings on death and loss. How does the past relate to the present, how do we cope with loss, and how do we live on?
Pinas continually seeks new elements to shape ‘hidden stories’. Her quest for past things always take shape in a variety of ways, therefore a newer version of her work is never a repetition of an earlier incarnation. The installation As you know him II is made of mixed materials, e.g. painted canvas. It comes into being intuitively and is highly personal. Her artwork has an elusive quality.
“Him” in the title stands for the imaginary: something that exists but cannot be directly observed.
